No manufacturer could build the engine. A bicycle mechanic did.
The deeper story
When Wilbur and Orville Wright needed an engine for their Flyer, available manufacturers could not provide one light enough for the task. Their bicycle-shop mechanic, Charles Taylor, helped turn the requirement into a working machine.
Taylor built a four-cylinder gasoline engine in the Wrights' Dayton shop. It produced about twelve horsepower while remaining light enough to fly. The brothers designed the propellers and transmission; Taylor's craftsmanship made their propulsion system real.
On December 17, 1903, that engine powered four flights at Kitty Hawk. The longest remained in the air for 59 seconds. The machine was the product of many forms of intelligence: theory, experiment, design, metalwork, repair, patience, and trust between collaborators.
Public memory often compresses invention into one or two famous names. Taylor's place in the story restores a larger truth. World-changing work is rarely solitary, and contribution does not become smaller because applause lands somewhere else.
Lessons learned
Creation is rarely solitary. Craft, competence, and service can carry a world-changing idea without receiving equal public attention.
